The difference between hinged and pivot door

If you're looking for a new front door, choosing how that door will open is just one of many decisions you're currently facing.By opening method, we mean the more traditional hinged door or the very modern pivot door.

Pivot doors look stunning and modern - but they're not the best choice if your facade is in an exposed location. The main benefit of a pivot door is undoubtedly that it looks stunning and expensive. If your house is very modern in style, pivot doors will only enhance that style further.

However, it's important to note that pivot doors require a few extra things to consider - especially if you have limited space or the door will be completely exposed to the elements.

Location - Pivot doors are generally not suitable for semi-exposed or exposed locations. Although it is weather-sealed, there is still a 2mm gap in the corners of the door. This means that in some cases, for example, if the door does not have additional protection against overhangs or a porch, you may find very small amounts of water ingress in bad weather.Again, if your house is being air tested, this tiny gap could affect the results. If that's important, a hinged door might be a better option.

Space - great beauty comes with a little compromise. The pivot is placed 200mm from the edge of the door, so you'll naturally see reduced walk-through space. If you're already running out of space, a hinged door might be a better option for you. While hinged doors work in any position and are completely weatherproof - they're nice and not as unique as pivot openings.

If you know that the above points apply to your situation, then a hinged door is by no means the second best option!

Where a pivot style can't be fully weather-sealed, a hinge style can. In fact, it has been double weather-sealed around the door. It is also highly airtight, making it suitable for use in any location, whether exposed or not.In cases where space is compromised by pivot doors, hinges are not an issue.

Should you choose a pivot door or a hinged door?

Choosing may seem difficult, but it essentially boils down to making sure the type of opening is right for your needs and location.

Choosing a pivot door is actually choosing a style. Being aware of potential downsides will help you decide if it's the best option. Even if the location or space isn't ideal, you may still want to live with those shortcomings in order to use an entryway that's both striking and functional. But if you know you're not going to be happy with anything other than being completely weatherproof or actually having a limited width available. Then opting for the hinge option is definitely not a downgrade!
