Window Safety for Kids

Famous studies show that about 5,000 children fall out of open Windows (including screens) every year in the United States. You may never have thought about how dangerous your Windows can be for your children, especially young children.

Get tips on planning and choosing Windows with safety in mind, as well as some guidance on teaching your child the basics of window safety.

Fresh air and sunshine create a welcoming and healthy environment for all of us who wish for our children. Doors and Windows make this ideal possible, and it doesn't have to come at the expense of your peace of mind. Here are some precautions you can take to increase your child's safety around Windows.

1.Take precautions that restrict window access

In general, building codes require Windows to be installed at a minimum height from the ground. This helps prevent accidental falls.

Keep in mind that many children love to climb. Be careful not to place beds and other furniture where children can access Windows.

When ventilation is needed, choose to open a window that is out of reach, then remember to close and lock the window.

2.Use window stoppers to restrict openings

There are several different types of window stoppers, but they all basically limit how far a window can be opened. You can install this child-safe wedge on sliding, single-hung and double-hung Windows. These small devices will close the window when your child tries to open it. So if you open the window a little bit (up to four inches), it's a good choice.

3.Use Window Cord Retrofit Kits

Window blinds contain cords that can be opened and closed. Therefore, you should find a safe way to remove these cords from your child.

Replacing them with cordless blinds would be the best solution, but sometimes installing a window cord retrofit kit is enough. It will hide the cable and prevent possible accidents in the future.

4.Select the window that opens from the top

There are many types of Windows on the market. Since you can choose the model that opens from the top or bottom, you should always choose the first model if possible.

There is reason to believe that it is more difficult for your child to reach the top of the window than the bottom.

5.Window alarms

You can also install window alarms just in case. As soon as your child opens the window, it will make a sound and alert you immediately.

6.Teach children the basics of window safety

It is important that children understand the basics of window safety. Insect screens, for example, are just that: a way to keep bugs out while still allowing fresh air in. They are not meant to prevent people or pets from falling out of Windows.
